Archie's Story
The story behind a one-of-a-kind Adirondack furniture company…
Archie’s Island was founded in 2000 by Archie McIntyre of Winchester, Massachusetts. Archie began getting serious about outdoor furniture in 1999 after a long career in corporate real estate. He made a few round back chairs for his back yard and on a whim, painted them with the brightest colors he could find. Sure enough, people started asking where they could buy them and, after some serious pressure from a friend who wanted the vicarious pleasure of an alternative career, Archie turned in the suit and tie for a spray gun and sand paper.
Since then, Archie has been building Archie’s Island and doing everything, from taking phone orders to sanding chairs and making deliveries. Theses days Archie works alongside five full time and seasonal workers prepping, priming, sanding and painting furniture in our small factory in Woburn, MA.
Furniture is our product but color is our defining attribute. We provide a palette of colors not available from most outdoor furniture manufacturers. Our colors display confidence and boldness, a willingness to stand out in a sea of sameness.
Today, the company offers beautiful Adirondack chairs, benches, and dining sets. Archie’s Island Furniture features superior quality in great designs and stunning colors. Archie’s Island is a place where physical beauty, quality of design and construction, and vibrant color come together to bring life and energy to the physical environment and inspire the places where we gather. That’s why we call it Happy Furniture.
So what’s this about an Island, you ask? After visiting many islands (and, in fact, deriving the design of our original round back chair from an “Island Chair” in the 1,000 Islands of the St. Lawrence River in Canada), we decided to define our own island. Part Coast of Maine, part Caribbean color and part South Seas tranquility, Archie’s Island is more a state of mind, a frame of reference, than a defined physical location.
If Archie’s Island was a real place, though, it would be an island where you’d walk barefoot, enjoy long, bright days, bask in crystal clear water, and relax in quality outdoor furniture with your feet up with bright colors and vibrant people around you. Maui, Mykonos, Tahiti, perhaps, Capri come to mind.
The beauty of Archie’s Island Furniture is that you can have some of that Island spirit as part of your daily life. Life’s short, be happy.
